      • Résumé :
Aeschylus was the first of the three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays can still be read or performed, the others being Sophocles and Euripides. He is often described as the father of tragedy: our knowledge of the genre begins with his work and our understanding of earlier tragedies is largely based on inferences from his surviving plays. Only seven of his estimated seventy to ninety plays have survived into modern times...

        Biographie:
Aeschylus (c. 525-456 BC) was one of the three great tragedians of ancient Greece and is often regarded as the father of Greek tragedy. His plays helped establish the dramatic structure and moral scope of classical theatre. Among his surviving works are Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, The Eumenides, Prometheus Bound, and The Suppliant Maidens. His tragedies combine powerful poetic language with profound reflections on justice, fate, and the relationship between humanity and the divine....

        Sommaire:
An early Greek tragedy depicting the aftermath of the Persian defeat at Salamis, presented from the perspective of the Persian court. The Persians, first performed in 472 BC, is among the earliest surviving works of Greek drama and remains distinctive for its treatment of a contemporary historical event. The play centres on the responses of Queen Atossa and the chorus, culminating in the appearance of the ghost of Darius and the return of Xerxes. The work combines dramatic structure with historical subject matter, offering insight into the consequences of imperial ambition and the limits of power. Its perspective, notably sympathetic to the defeated, distinguishes it within the corpus of Greek tragedy. Aeschylus's treatment emphasises themes of hubris, retribution, and the instability of fortune, situating individual and political events within a broader moral order....
