Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) was an American writer, naturalist, philosopher, surveyor, abolitionist, and one of the central figures of American Transcendentalism. Born in Concord, Massachusetts, Thoreau became closely associated with Ralph Waldo Emerson and the intellectual world of New England reform, but his own work developed a sharper, more solitary, and more practical independence.
