En un soleado departamento de la Ciudad de México, habitan tres ancianas: la bobe Anna, la tutta Lena y Modesta, todas ellas sobrevivientes de lo imposible. De pronto, un día, alguien llega a comer. Tatiana ha hecho un pacto bajo las jacarandas con su abuela. Una historia está esperando. El viejo samovar oxidado, perdido en el tiempo, se enciende. La estufa crepita. El aire entra con un vendaval de naufragios y polvaredas, chales bordados, tardes, furias, siestas, y criminales de amores duplicados en el tiempo que resucitan.
 
El samovar funciona como aquella magdalena en la que los recuerdos, los amores, el aprendizaje de saber de dónde viene una, se van entretejiendo con estas maravillosas voces que pintan los lienzos en los que Tatiana se irá reconstruyendo. ¿Es posible describir qué se siente recobrar un idioma que se creyó perdido? Y con ese idioma, un mundo; con ese mundo, el propio mundo.
 
Ethel Krauze, con indiscutible maestría y musicalidad en el lenguaje, nos invita a pasear por esa Rusia previa a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, por aquel México lleno de posibilidades, y por la vida de tres mujeres que fueron semilla.

Survivors of the impossible, three old women live in a sunny apartment in Mexico City: bubbeh Anna, tutta Lena, and Modesta. Suddenly, one day, someone comes to dinner. On one hand, Tatiana has made a pact under the jacarandas with her grandmother. On the other, a story awaits. Meanwhile, the old rusty samovar, lost in time, lights up again, and the stove crackles. The wind brings shipwrecks and dust, embroidered shawls, afternoons, furies, siestas, and resurrected criminals of duplicated lovers through time.
 
The samovar works like that pastry in which memories, lovers, and the knowledge of our origins are interwoven with the wonderful voices that paint the canvases on which Tatiana will rebuild herself. Is it possible to describe what it feels like to recover a language that was thought to be lost? And with that language, a world; with that world, the world itself.

With undeniable artistry and musicality in the language, Ethel Krauze invites us to walk through Russia before the Second World War, through a Mexico full of possibilities, and the lives of three women, the initial seed.
