Horatio Alger Jr. was an American author born on January 13, 1832, in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He is best known for his rags-to-riches novels, focusing on themes of perseverance, hard work, and rising from poverty to success. After graduating from Harvard University and attending Harvard Divinity School, Alger wrote stories centered around young boys who, through integrity and effort, overcame adversity and reached middle-class comfort. His most famous work, Ragged Dick, became iconic in the genre of juvenile fiction. Although his works fell out of favor in the 20th century, they were immensely popular during his lifetime and continue to influence children's literature. Alger passed away on July 18, 1899. Edward L. Stratemeyer, born on October 4, 1862, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was a prolific writer and the founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, known for producing successful children s book series such as The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Stratemeyer wrote or oversaw the creation of over 1,300 books, selling more than 500 million copies. He died on May 10, 1930, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, New Jersey. His legacy in children's literature is still significant today....

His works are known for their rags-to-riches narrative, which had a formative influence on the Gilded Age United States. All of Alger's young adult books revolve around the idea that a young man can change his situation for the better by acting morally. The Horatio Alger myth holds that the young man achieves success via toil, however, this is untrue. The youngster behaves according to classic characteristics like honesty, generosity, and altruism in the actual stories, and success is invariably the result of an accident that works to the boy's advantage. The youngster might recover a sizable sum of money that was misplaced or save a passenger from a derailed carriage. A wealthy person notices the youngster and his predicament as a result of this. For instance, in one tale, a little child narrowly avoids being hit by a streetcar before being snatched away to safety by a homeless orphan youth....
