The applications of adhesives in dentistry are growing with time. The need for a dental adhesive material is obvious since the destructive nature of the oral environment and the numerous factors encountered in the mouth. For achieving a successful treatment, we need to understand basic science which includes its composition, its structure, and its application. Dr. Buonocore first advocated the importance of adhesion to promote retention and marginal seal, a significant factor for withstanding and resisting the forces of contraction during restorative procedures. The development of dental adhesives helped in achieving an interaction between the dental-resin substrate, also beneficial for post-operative sensitivity and recurrent caries. Adhesive dental materials include the glass-ionomer and zinc polycarboxylate cements, and also the dentine bonding agents used to bond composite resin restorations to the dentine of the tooth.
