(please scroll down for english version) Zwischen dem Jahr 849 und der Gegenwart gab es unglaubliche 22 Hauptst?dte und 39 Wechsel der Regierungssitze in Myanmar. Vast Land von Wolfang Bellwinkel ist eine fotografische Studie der letzten drei Hauptst?dte des Landes: Mandalay (1857-1885), Yangon (1885-2005) und Naypyitaw (seit 2005). Alle wurden auf dem Rei?brett geplant, alle sind vom Machtanspruch und Selbstverst?ndnis derjenigen gekennzeichnet, die sie errichteten. Anhand dieser drei St?dte erz?hlt Bellwinkel von einem Land, in dem sich seit der kolonialen Unterdr?ckung bis zum Ausnahmezustand der Gegenwart eine Trag?die an die n?chste reiht. Weltkrieg, B?rgerkrieg, Naturkatastrophen, Milit?rdiktatur, ethnische Konflikte und Vertreibung haben sich eingebrannt in die Stadtbilder der Kapitalen. Im Gegensatz zur Dramatik und Dichte der Ereignissen sind Bellwinkels Bilder n?chterne und pr?zise Fotografien, mit denen er den Charakter und die verschiedenen Zeitschichten der drei St?dte freilegt. Damit leistet Bellwinkel nichts weniger als eine Arch?ologie der j?ngeren Geschichte Myanmars. Wolfgang Bellwinkel (*1959) beendete 1994 sein Studium der Fotografie an der Folkwang Schule in Essen mit einer Arbeit ?ber den Krieg in Bosnien. Urbanisierung, gesellschaftliche Umbr?che, politische Gewalt - aber auch seine pers?nliche Stellung in der Welt - das sind die Themen der Projekte die Bellwinkel realisiert und international ausstellt. Bellwinkel lehrt an Hochschulen in Deutschland und dem asiatischen Raum, wo er neben Berlin auch lebt und arbeitet. Between the year 849 and the present, Myanmar has had an astounding 22 capitals while the seat of government changed 39 times. Vast Land by Wolfang Bellwinkel is a photographic study of the country's last three capitals: Mandalay (1857-1885), Yangon (1885-2005) and Naypyitaw (since 2005). All of them were planned on the drawing board, all are shaped by the political aspirations and the self-image of those who built them. Using these three cities as case studies, Bellwinkel tells the story of a country in which, from colonial oppression to the current state of emergency, one tragedy follows the next. World war, civil war, natural disasters, military dictatorship, ethnic conflicts and displacement have left their marks on cityscapes of the capitals. In contrast to the drama of the rapidly unfolding events, Bellwinkel's images are sober and precise photographs that reveal the character and various historical layers of the three cities. In doing so, Bellwinkel undertakes nothing less than an archaeology of Myanmar's recent history. Wolfgang Bellwinkel (*1959) completed his degree in photography at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen in 1994 with a project on the war in Bosnia. Urbanization, social upheaval, political ?violence - but also his personal position in the world - are the major themes of the projects Bellwinkel realizes and exhibits internationally. Bellwinkel teaches at universities in Germany and Asia, living and working both there and in Berlin.
