Love's inability to reach its intended target is the subject of much of the novel, and it gives it a pathos and tenderness, as well as sense of inevitability and tragedy, that should make it ripe for book club discussions and accessible to a wider readership than Netsuke

Rikki Ducornet: An artist and fiction writer, Rikki Ducornet has illustrated books by Robert Coover, Jorge Luis Borges, Forrest Gander, and Joanna Howard. Her paintings have been exhibited widely, including, most recently, at the Pierre Menard Gallery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Salvador Allende Museum in Santiago, Chile.
