Sebastian Riemer besch?ftigt sich in seiner Serie Press Paintings mit dem Altpapier der Pressebildwirtschaft des letzten Jahrhunderts. In zahlreichen Bildern analysiert er ihre aus heutiger Sicht primitive h?ndische Bearbeitung. Es werden Fragen ?ber die K?rperlichkeiten der Jahrzehnte alten Bildtr?ger sowie der abgebildeten Personen aufgeworfen. Es wirkt grotesk, drastisch oder gar gewaltsam, wenn sich zeigt, wie sie im Motiv beschnitten, geformt, >versch?nert< werden, und zugleich ein ?ffentliches scheinwahrhaftiges Bildged?chtnis konstruiert wird. Die minuti?sen medienarch?ologischen Aneignungen in Schwarz-Wei? lenken den Blick sowohl auf das Versprechen ihrer Bilder nach Echtheit als auch auf die verbl?ffend malerische Qualit?t von Retuschefarbe. So verschwimmt in diesen seit 2013 entstandenen Arbeiten die Grenze zwischen Fotografie und Malerei, dem Dokumentarischen und seinem Antonym. Sebastian Riemer, geb. 1982 in Oberhausen, lebt und arbeitet in D?sseldorf. Er studierte an der Kunstakademie D?sseldorf bei Christopher Williams und Thomas Ruff. -- Sebastian Riemer's Press Paintings series looks at the waste paper produced in the last century by the press photo industry. He examines numerous images, analysing the manual work that went into editing them, a primitive process from today's perspective. This throws up questions about the material nature of the decades-old image supports and the physicality of the people depicted. The motifs are cropped, styled, and beautified, a practice that seems grotesque, radical, and even violent when it becomes evident how this also constructs an illusory image in the public memory. The meticulous black-and-white appropriations are an act of media archaeology, directing our attention to the images' promise of authenticity and to the striking painterly quality of the retouched colour. The works, produced in the period since 2013, blur the boundary between photography and painting, between the documentary and its opposite. Sebastian Riemer, geb. 1982 in Oberhausen, lives and works in D?sseldorf. He studied at Kunstakademie D?sseldorf under Christopher Williams and Thomas Ruff.
