Das Werk von Alex Grein (geb. 1983 in K?ln, lebt und arbeitet in D?sseldorf) ist gepr?gt vom Ausloten fotografischer M?glichkeiten sowie ihrer Reflexion, Befragung und Herausforderung durch den Einbezug weiterer k?nstlerischer Darstellungsformen. Die R?ckf?hrung digitalen Bildmaterials ins Physische, also die Rematerialisierung, spielt eine entscheidende Rolle f?r die Entwicklung ihrer k?nstlerischen Sprache. Neben klassischer Fotografie entstehen Fotoskulpturen und r?umliche Installationen, deren Motive eigens fotografisch angefertigt wurden oder ihrem Archiv entstammen. Im Angesicht digitalisierter Bildproduktion und im Sekundentakt wachsender Bildervorr?te geht die K?nstlerin der Frage nach, auf welche Weise ein einzelnes Bild heute und in Zukunft ?berhaupt noch ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal erlangen kann, und untersucht die gesellschaftliche und politische Relevanz der Fotografie auf experimentelle Weise.

Beyond the Glare

Alex Grein's (b. Cologne, 1983; lives and works in Du?sseldorf) art is informed by her exploration of the possibilities of photography, which she continually scrutinizes and challenges by incorporating other representational modes into it. The effort to return digital imagery to the physical domain-in effect, the medium's rematerialization- has been key to the evolution of her creative idiom. In addition to classical photo- graphs, she makes photo-sculptures and installations in three dimensions based on motifs she shoots herself or draws from her archive. In light of today's digital image production and picture stockpiles growing second by second, the artist probes the question of whether and how a single image can set itself apart today and in the future and undertakes an experimental investigation into photography's social and political relevance.

We Were Here offers comprehensive insight into Grein's practice, presenting works from the past six years. With texts by Ros?rio Salema de Carvalho, Linda Conze, and Stefan Gronert.
