Mit More than a story stellt Markus Draper eine Auswahl seiner Bilder vor, die auf den Ausbruch des Vulkans Mount St. Helens im US-Bundesstat Washington am 18. Mai 1980 zur?ckgehen. Fotos und Videos dieser Naturkatastrophe begannen Markus Draper 2007 zu faszinieren. Im selben Jahr w?hlte er erstmals die eigent?mlichen Formationen der Aschewolken als Motiv, bis heute sind sie immer wieder Gegenstand seiner Malerei. Dem K?nstler ist wichtig, dass die Bilder nicht verortbar sind. Meine Bilder wollen kein konkretes Ereignis wiedergeben, sondern ein allgemeines Gef?hl der Unsicherheit zum Ausdruck bringen, eine Art soziale Diagnose: Es gibt ein Unbehagen, diffuse ?ngste und Malaisen, die sich nicht auf bestimmte Ursachen beziehen lassen. Aber auch eine Art Kritik: M?glicherweise ist es angenehmer, in einem Zustand der Angst zu verharren, als eine Ver?nderung der Verh?ltnisse in Angriff zu nehmen. Markus Draper, geb. 1969 und aufgewachsen in G?rlitz, studierte 1991 bis 2000 an der Hochschule f?r Bildende K?nste Dresden, am Central Saint Martins College, London und an der Columbia University, New York. Markus Draper lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. -- Markus Draper's More than a story presents a selection of his images going back to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington state in the US on 18 May 1980. Draper began to develop a fascination with photos and videos of this natural disaster in 2007. In the same year, he focused for the first time on the volcano's peculiar ash cloud formations-a motif that would become a recurrent subject that still informs his paintings today. It is important for the artist that his pictures cannot be located. My paintings do not seek to depict a concrete event-rather, they express a general feeling of insecurity, acting as a kind of diagnosis of society: there is a sense of unease, of vague fear and malaise that cannot be related to any specific causes. They also express a kind of criticism. It may be more comfortable for people to persevere in a state of fear than attempt to change the situation they are in.
