In the year 96, the Apostle John writing from Patmos, at the direction of Jesus Christ, mentions seven churches, but not Rome. If Rome had been pre-eminent, or the bishop of that place had been greater than other bishops, the fact would have been mentioned 3 but Jesus has said, He that will be greatest among you, let him be your servant. He says, The kings Of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors3 but ye shall not be so 3 but he that is greatest among you let him be as the younger, and he that is chief as he that doth serve. And, further, Call no man father on earth, that is, in a religious sense.
