Résumé :
Excerpt from Lives Philosophers: Of the Time of George III Henry brougham was born at Edinburgh on the 19th September, 1778. He was the eldest child of Henry Brougham, of Brougham in Westmoreland, and Scales Hall in Cumberland, and Eleanor, only child of Dr James Syme, one of the clergy of the city of Edinburgh. Through his father, he was the direct heir of a long line of lords and squires of Burgham or Brougham, who appear to have held the Westmoreland property, in almost unbroken continuity, from the time of Edward the Confessor; but he complains that none of his many ancestors ever rose above the dead level of respectable mediocrity. His maternal grandmother was the sister of Principal Robert son, the distinguished historian, and he considered he owed at least as much to his Celtic descent, through his mother, as to the Saxon blood of the ancient family of Brougham.
