      • Résumé :
Surnames As A Science is an arresting study of how surnames map history and society. Names reveal hidden social stories. Robert Ferguson's careful enquiry functions as a practical surname origins guide and a surprising Victorian genealogy reference, an onomastics study book that makes the history of family names both intelligible and engaging. With lucid argumentation it sets out English surnames explained, tracing the etymology of last names across place-names, occupations, nicknames and kinship, and so serves as a steady genealogists resource as well as an academic research tool for those working on British family history and nineteenth century Britain. Historically significant for its systematic approach, Ferguson's work offers a window into Victorian mindsets and administrative habits...

        Biographie:
Robert Ferguson is a musician, songwriter, vegetarian, world traveller, writer and animal lover; especially cats. His current aim is to write more novels, which will always have a Scottish theme or connection; concealed somewhere in his writing. He just loves making up curious stories and writing them down. Robert lives in Alloa, Scotland, with his wife, Lorna, dog, Ziggy, cats, Jesse and Roxy. He has a son, Jamie, daughter-in-law, Gemma, granddaughter, Maya, and grandson, Cooper. The Beatles are his FAB 4!

        Sommaire:
it is a useful companion for Victorian era studies and continues to inform classic surname studies. Its taxonomy and patient logic help readers untangle variant spellings and regional forms, while its examples illuminate how migration, trade and social change are recorded in names. Casual readers drawn to word history and family lore will find it unexpectedly readable, and scholars seeking a period perspective on onomastics will value its methodical tone. Collector or casual browser, the volume rewards both curiosity and careful study. Beyond practical utility, the book captures a Victorian preoccupation with classification and identity, making it valuable to cultural historians as well as to students of language. Its patient, empirical habit of mind exemplifies the approach common in nineteenth-century Britain to social evidence, and it remains cited by those engaged in Victorian era studies. From the casual reader intrigued by etymology to the collector assembling a library of classic surname studies, the work rewards both light reading and sustained research. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike....
