Présentation Candide de Voltaire Format Broché
- Livre Humour
Résumé :
Candide, ou l'Optimisme is a French satire first published in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best; Candide: or, The Optimist; and Candide: Optimism. Candide is the story of a gentle man who, though pummeled and slapped in every direction by fate, clings desperately to the belief that he lives in the best of all possible worlds. On the surface a witty, bantering tale, this eighteenth-century classic is actually a savage, satiric thrust at the philosophical optimism that proclaims that all disaster and human suffering is part of a benevolent cosmic plan. Fast, funny, often outrageous, the French philosopher's immortal narrative takes Candide around the world to discover that -- contrary to the teachings of his distringuished tutor Dr. Pangloss -- all is not always for the best. Alive with wit, brilliance, and graceful storytelling, Candide has become Voltaire's most celebrated work.
Biographie:
Voltaire, born Fran?ois-Marie Arouet in 1694, was a French writer and philosopher celebrated for his wit and advocacy of civil liberties. His sharp criticism of the Catholic Church and French institutions often led to clashes with authorities, resulting in his imprisonment and exile. Despite this, he continued to publish works that challenged the status quo, cementing his role as a leading figure in the Enlightenment. In his lifetime, Voltaire wrote across genres, producing plays, essays, novels, and historical works that expressed his views on freedom, religion, and government. His time in England deeply influenced his philosophy, introducing him to constitutional monarchy, which contrasted sharply with French absolutism. Through works like Candide, he employed satire to question optimism and criticized political and religious oppression.Voltaire's influence extended beyond his life, shaping modern thought on justice, reason, and individual rights. He lived his final years at his estate in Ferney, which became a hub for intellectuals across Europe. Today, he is remembered as a champion of freedom and reason, whose legacy endures in the realms of literature and philosophy....
Sommaire:
Francois-Marie Arouet was a French Enlightenment writer, philosopher (philosophe), satirist, and historian who lived from November 21, 1694, to May 30, 1778. He was better known by the pen name M. de Voltaire. Voltaire fought for free speech, religious freedom, and the separation of church and state. He was known for his wit and his criticism of Christianity (especially the Roman Catholic Church) and slavery. It is said that Voltaire wrote a lot of different kinds of writing, such as plays, poems, novels, essays, histories, and even science explanations. He wrote greater than twenty thousand letters and two thousand books and leaflets. Voltaire was one of the first writers to become famous and make a lot of money around the world. He spoke out for civil rights and was always in danger because of the strict censorship laws of the Catholic French monarchy. In his polemics, he made fun of prejudice, religious dogma, and the French institutions of the time in a very harsh way. Candide, his most famous and important work, is a short story that makes fun of many events, philosophers, and ideas popular at the time. Its main target is Gottfried Leibniz's idea that our world is the best of all possible worlds....
