Physicians must respond to the strong and growing desire of many women to have a voice in their health care and they must be professionally obligated to communicate to their patients the option of treatment. Today, women want to be informed and active participants rather than passive subjects. No woman should be subjected to a hysterectomy because of fibroids unless she has been fully informed about the alternative and agrees to the decision.
