Résumé :
Deputy U.S. Marshal Charlie Harlow is committed to serving justice. It's doing it by the book that's the problem... When a case goes wrong and a fellow law enforcement official is killed, Charlie once again finds himself in the crosshairs of the Justice Department. The only way he knows to get his mind straight for the way things went down is to throw himself back into another case. Bringing a fugitive to justice may be just what the doctor ordered... But when his chief deputy sends Charlie and his partner down to capture a fugitive hiding out on his girlfriend's farm, a routine case turns out to be much more than meets the eye. Deputy Kim Riggins is taken hostage, and Charlie throws everything he can into the hunt to save her. Soon the game of cat-and-mouse turns deadly, and Charlie must use his skills and cunning to outsmart those responsible and bring them to justice. But Charlie rarely does anything by the book. This time, his relentless and somewhat reckless pursuit sets him on a dangerous path. And if he can't bring the case to a close, the person he cares about most will be the one who pays the price....
Biographie:
Gregory has written over twenty-three books, and is the author of four mystery and crime fiction series, including the Henry Walsh Private Investigator series, the US Marshal Charlie Harlow series, the Joe Sheldon crime series, and the new Jake Horn mysteries. His standalone crime novels include Drag the Man Down, Half Cocked, Danny Womack's .38, Biscayne Boogie, and a number of published short stories. He won his first award as a writer at ten years old, after sending a story to the Providence Journal about his pet husky being shot by a local farmer. The writing most likely wasn't very good, but the fact a young boy's dog was shot (true story!) tugged at the editor's heart strings just enough. His dog, luckily, survived. But that wasn't a paid gig, so years later he ended up in advertising. He eventually became a copywriter, specializing in direct mail and writing fundraising letters to help raise money for animals and children. The first book he wrote was nonfiction, but he quickly realized he wasn't smart enough to be giving anyone advice. He finally decided making up lies for a living would be much more fun.Somehow, he became an author.Raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Gregory lives with his wife, kids, and his dog, Jake, in North Carolina....
Sommaire:
US Marshal Charlie Harlow has stood in front of hundreds of doors without knowing who, or what, is behind them... When a fugitive hunt goes sideways, Charlie's friend in the sheriff's office doesn't make it out. Now, the Justice Department wants to know how it all went wrong. And they're looking at Charlie for answers. Still carrying the weight of regret, he throws himself into the job, determined to make things right. His next target? An aging fugitive holed up on a horse farm in North Carolina. It should be routine. It should be easy. But it never is. When his partner is taken at gunpoint, Charlie is thrust into a relentless chase where every mistake has a price. And he's made plenty of them. The rules no longer matter. Mercy is off the table. But as Charlie fights to save his partner, another battle looms-the one he's been avoiding. His marriage is over, but the divorce papers sit unsigned. This time, there's no one to chase, no one to fight. Just one last door to walk through... if he has the courage....
