Présentation From The Deep Woods To Civilization Format Broché

Résumé :
First published in 1916, From the Deep Woods to Civilization is the fascinating life account by Charles A. Eastman. Born in 1858 on a Santee Dakota reservation near Redwood Falls, Minnesota, Eastman was educated as a physician at Boston University and was a prolific author and national lecturer. Widely regarded as one of the twentieth-century's most important speakers on Sioux culture and history, Eastman was a significant figure in the movement to reform laws and attitudes towards Native Americans. Eastman first documented his childhood in his 1902 memoir Indian Boyhood, which chronicles his time with the Dakota Sioux on the reservation until he was 15 years old and left to pursue a Western education. Eastman's memoir was widely read and did much to change perceptions of Sioux culture. From the Deep Woods to Civilization picks up where Indian Boyhood left off and follows Eastman as he attended school with white students, became certified as a medical doctor, and worked tirelessly to benefit his fellow Native Americans. A uniquely American story, Eastman's autobiography is a rich and deeply satisfying account of struggle and perseverance. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
Biographie:
Charles Alexander Eastman was an American physician, author, and social reformer who lived from February 19, 1858, until January 8, 1939. He was one of the most prolific authors and speakers on Sioux ethnohistory and American Indian politics in the early 20th century and the first Native American to receive a Western medical certification. Eastman's heritage included Santee Dakota, English, and French. His older sibling John went on to become a pastor. A Presbyterian missionary named John (Mapiyawaku Kida) Eastman worked in the Santee Dakota settlement in Flandreau, South Dakota. He became more involved in politics and Native American rights concerns after serving as a doctor on South Dakotan reservations. He established 32 YMCA chapters for Native Americans as part of his efforts to better the lives of children. He is recognized as the first Native American author to portray Native Americans in American history. The Boy Scouts of America was also founded with his assistance. At his Minnesota birth, Eastman was given the name Hakadah, which in Dakotan translates to pitiful last. Because his mother passed very soon after his birth, Eastman was given that name.
