      • Résumé :
A forbidden passion that burns across a fragile horizon of honour and fate. Carmen plunges readers into a sunlit world of music, danger and desire, where love is tested by jealousies that threaten to tear a life apart. This restored edition presents Prosper M?rim?e's novella in a Spanish setting with precision and lyricism, offering a compact, intense exploration of romantic tragedy, fate, and freedom. The tale unfolds with a gypsy chorus of loyalties, honour codes and smoky longing, delivering a powerful meditation on longing, risk and consequence. It is at once a taut romance and a moral riddle, inviting both casual readers and classic?literature collectors to linger on the edge of what must be surrendered for love. A note on literary and historical significance marks this edition as more than a reprint. M?rim?e's compact craftsmanship helped shape nineteenth century Spanish and French literary sensibilities, and the story's resonance extends to the operatic imagination, appealing to fans of the Bizet opera as well as students of literary fiction. Here, the atmosphere of Seville and the tension between desire and duty feel incandescent, timeless, and vividly accessible. Out of print for decades, Alpha Editions has republished this novella with care, restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint, it is a collector's item and a cultural treasure, inviting new readers to discover a lean, luminous classic that stays with the heart long after the final line....

        Biographie:
Prosper M rim e (28 September 1803 23 September 1870) was a Romanticist French writer and one of the forefathers of the novella, a short novel or long short story. He was also a well-known archaeologist and historian, as well as a pivotal role in architectural preservation history. He is best known for his novella Carmen, which inspired Bizet's opera Carmen. He studied Russian, a language he adored, and translated the works of several prominent Russian authors, including Pushkin and Gogol, into French. He was the inspector of French historical monuments from 1830 to 1860, and was in charge of the protection of many historic structures, including the ancient stronghold of Carcassonne and the restoration of the fa ade of Notre-Dame de Paris. He found, with the novelist George Sand, the sequence of tapestries known as The Lady and the Unicorn and arranged for their preservation. He was involved in the establishment of the Mus e National du Moyen Era in Paris, where the tapestries are presently housed. His name appears on the official database of French monuments, the Base M rim e....
