        Biographie:
John Jay Chapman was an American author who lived from March 2, 1862, to November 4, 1933. He was born on March 2, 1862, in New York City. Born in 1833, Henry Grafton Chapman Jr. was a broker who rose to become president of the New York Stock Exchange. His mother was Eleanor Kingsland Jay, who died in 1921. One of the most important people fighting against slavery was his paternal grandma, Maria Weston Chapman. She worked on The Liberator with William Lloyd Garrison. The U.S. Minister to Austria-Hungary from 1817 to 1894, John Jay, was his maternal grandfather. Eleanor Kingsland (n?e Field) Jay was his maternal grandmother. The chief justice of the US Supreme Court, John Jay, was the grandfather of his grandfather. William Jay was the father of his grandfather. He went to school at Harvard University and at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. After finishing from Harvard in 1884, he went on a tour of Europe before going back to Harvard Law School to study again. He became a lawyer in 1888 and worked as a lawyer until 1898. At the same time, he was getting noticed as a writer of great skill. Originality and beautiful language are hallmarks of his work, and many reviewers put him at the top of the list of American essayists of his time....

        Sommaire:
it is a carefully wrought exploration of individualism and culture, morality and society, art and education. John Jay Chapman curates a philosophical essay collection that speaks to both the mind and the heart, inviting liberal arts students, college literature readers, and seasoned readers of American literary criticism to engage with ideas that shaped turn of the century America. The essays stand as references for essays and as a window into a pivotal era when intellect, conscience, and public life intertwined. Alpha Editions restores this work for today's readership and for future generations, preserving its voice while making it accessible anew. It is not merely a reprint but a collector's item and a cultural treasure, with care given to tone, nuance, and context. For casual readers, the book offers clear, inspiring prose and timeless questions. For the classic-literature collector, it is a meticulously repaired gateway to a distinguished emerson criticism collection, a durable beacon for study and reflection. Ideal for those seeking a classic essay collection that rewards rereading, discussion, and lifelong curiosity....
