A pictorial history of the year's major developments, this collection of more than 360 editorial cartoons focuses the spotlight on those stories that claimed banner treatment in newspapers around the world.

Included are such intriguing issues as the travails of the Carter Administration, the Bert Lance affair, the cash-and-carry Korean scandal, the antics of Brother Billy Carter, a balky U.S. Congress, and the free-wheeling diplomacy of United Nations ambassador Andrew Young. Without a doubt, the year seemed tailor-made for editorial cartoonists everywhere.

The cartoonist's pen also gives special attention to the continuing struggle for peace in the Middle East, the Panama Canal debate, the political tinderbox in Africa, and President Carter's advocacy of human rights throughout the world.

Twenty-six of the year's major issues and events are explored in depth by these talented artists, among whom are numbered dozens of award winners, including Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonists.

This volume also pays special tribute to the dean of the editorial profession, Cy Hungerford of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The venerable Hungerford delighted readers with his cartoons for seventy-four years before retiring in 1977 at the age of eighty-nine.

As in the previous editions, this volume is edited by Charles Brooks, former president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and winner of numerous awards for cartooning excellence.

Biographie:
In addition to his lifetime of work as an editorial cartoonist, Charles Brooks has had another rewarding long-time career: that of editor of Pelican's Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year Series. This landmark series, begun in 1972, showcases the work of editorial cartoonists from the United States and Canada. Throughout his life, Brooks has not only seen history unfold before his eyes, but he also has recorded it for posterity in his cartoons. So, too, do the editorial cartoonists that he chooses to appear in each edition of Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year. The cartoons, inevitably more famous than the cartoonists themselves, become a part of the history that they capture. Charles Brooks is past president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and was a cartoonist for the Birmingham (Ala.) News for thirty-eight years. He has been the recipient of thirteen Freedom Foundation awards, a national VFW award, two Vigilante Patriot awards, and a Sigma Delta Chi award for editorial cartooning. Brooks' cartoons appear in more than eighty books, including textbooks on political science, economics, and history, as well as encyclopedias and yearbooks. His original cartoons are on display in the archives of many libraries....
