George MacDonald (1824 - 1905) was a Scottish author, poet and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. In addition to his fairy tales, MacDonald wrote several works of Christian theology, including several collections of sermons. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including. MacDonald's first novel David Elginbrod was published in 1863. His best-known works are Phantastes, The Princess and the Goblin, At the Back of the North Wind, and Lilith (1895), all fantasy novels, and fairy tales such as The Light Princess, The Golden Key, and The Wise Woman. George MacDonald wrote over fifty books and collections of poems, and was a contemporary and friend of Lewis Carroll and other well-known writers of the second half of the 1800s. He is principally remembered for his children's books, the most famous of which are included in this volume. At the Back of the North Wind, and The Princess and the Goblin first appeared in the magazine Good Words for the Young, and were then published in 1870 and 1871, respectively. The Princess and Curdie did not appear in book form until 1882.
