Yet nothing seems to me more natural than a fire in the grate. oubtless, when I began to walk, one of my first excursions was to the fender, that I might gaze more nearly at the live thing roaring and raging behind it; and I dare say I dimly wondered by what blessed dispensation this creature was allowed in a domain so peaceful as my nursery. I do not think I ever needed to be warned against scaling the fender. I knew by instinct that the creature within it was dangerous - fiercer still than the cat which had once strayed into the room and scratched me for my advances. As I grew older, I ceased to wonder at the creature's presence and learned to call it `the fire,' quite lightly. There are so many queer things in the world that we have no time to go on wondering at the queerness of the things we see habitually. It is not that these things are in themselves less queer than they at first seemed to us. It is that our vision of them has been dimmed.

Sir Henry Maximilian Max Beerbohm (24 August 1872 - 20 May 1956) was an English essayist, parodist and caricaturist under the signature Max. He first became known in the 1890s as a dandy and a humorist. He was the drama critic for the Saturday Review from 1898 until 1910, when he relocated to Rapallo, Italy. In his later years he was popular for his occasional radio broadcasts. Among his best-known works is his only novel, Zuleika Dobson, published in 1911. His caricatures, drawn usually in pen or pencil with muted watercolour tinting, are in many public collections.

He was the Saturday Review's drama critic from 1898 to 1910, when he moved to Rapallo, Italy. In his senior years, he gained popularity for his occasional radio appearances. Zuleika Dobson, his only novel, was released in 1911 and is among his most well-known works. Many public collections feature his caricatures, which are often created in pen or pencil with muted watercolor tinting. Henry Maximilian Beerbohm (1811-1892) was the youngest of nine children born to Julius Ewald Edward Beerbohm, a Lithuanian-born grain dealer, at 57 Palace Gardens Terrace in London, which is now commemorated with a blue plaque. His mother was Eliza Draper Beerbohm, Julius' late first wife's sister. Beerbohm had four half-siblings, one of them, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, was an established theater actor when Max was a toddler. Other elder half-siblings were author and explorer Julius Beerbohm and author Constance Beerbohm....
