      > This deeply moving book is at the intersection of history and biography. The story of the daughter of a distinguished Beijing family is set against the horror of the Japanese invasion of China and the civil war that followed. - Diana Lary, Director, Centre of Chinese Research, University of British Columbia An extraordinary read! Dramatically changed my perspective on those years of war in China. - David deWilde, Founder, Chartwell Partners Fast-paced and engaging, this takes us back to Japan's invasion of China which led to Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima. Granddaughter of China's renowned Liang Qichao, Nancy/Nianci gives a raw and fresh perspective on love, freedom, and sacrifice. - Nora Wu, formerly Vice-Chair, PwC International I'm delighted that it's now possible for the world to see this story. A narrative derived from the writings of someone who lived through the experience is the most valuable kind of history. - Fenrong Liu, Professor, Department of Philosophy, Tsinghua University...

      Biographie:
Bian An, better known as Ann Bennett Spence, has a bicultural and biracial background. Her father was from a Republican family in the Boston area, and her mother from a distinguished Chinese family in Beijing. Her parents' marriage in 1940 was a news story, not a wedding announcement, so unusual in Boston was marriage between whites and Chinese immigrants still banned from citizenship. Bian An was their first-born. In adulthood An(n) lived mainly in Cambridge MA and Palo Alto CA, and was married first to Michael Spence, and much later to Richard Bowers. She has three adult children. She was a managing director at a global investment firm, where she advised universities on governance and financial matters. As a 2018 DCI Fellow at Stanford University, she researched her mother's decision to flee Japanese-occupied Beijing, for America. An(n) authored Nancy Nianci: A Story of Wars, a historical novel based on her findings. Currently her writing focuses on short stories, historical fiction, essays, and mystery, exploring race, family fracture, catastrophe-and renewal. She lives in Exeter, NH and Boston, MA.

      Sommaire:

In adulthood, after Wellesley College, she went on to East Asian studies at Harvard and a Stanford MBA, followed by a long career working on endowment advisory projects in the US and internationally.
