Jim is a young seaman, who's faced with a life or death scenario, and chooses self-preservation over the well-being of his unsuspecting passengers and crew. A cidade era na ?poca parte do Imp?rio Russo dos Czares convencionada como a Pol?nia-Russa, tendo sido anteriormente territ?rio polaco. Os seus pais eram nascidos da nobreza polaca, pelo que Conrad ? habitualmente considerado um escritor polaco-ingl?s (e n?o ucraniano) por essa ascend?ncia e pela aquisi??o da cidadania brit?nica em 1886, tendo-se radicado em Inglaterra em 1894 onde iniciou a sua carreira de escrita liter?ria.
