La s?rie ?Aegeum? se donne pour but d'?clairer la conqu?te romaine de l'Orient grec sous l'angle ?conomique. ?dit? par Richard Ashton et Nathan Badoud, le premier volume de cette s?rie forme l'aboutissement de recherches collectives sur les monnaies des iie et ier s. av. J.-C. Les dix contributions qu'il r?unit permettent de d?couvrir la mani?re dont les Romains se sont empar?s des ressources des cit?s grecques et de suivre la progressive ?mergence du denier comme monnaie unique dans l'espace ?g?en. Elles font plus g?n?ralement progresser notre compr?hension du fonctionnement de l'?conomie antique, et marquent une importante ?tape m?thodologique dans l'analyse des monnayages d'?poque hell?nistique. The purpose of the Aegeum series is to shed light on the Roman conquest of the Greek East from an economic viewpoint. The first volume of the series, edited by Richard Ashton and Nathan Badoud, is the result of collaborative research into the coinages of the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C. Its ten contributions allow us to uncover how the Romans gained control over the economic resources of the Greek cities, and to follow the gradual emergence of the denarius as the dominant silver coinage of the Aegean region. More generally, they advance our understanding of how the ancient economy functioned, and mark an important methodological advance in the analysis of the coinages of the Hellenistic period.

Apr?s avoir ?tudi? les sciences de l'Antiquit? et la numismatique ? l'universit? d'Oxford, Richard Ashton a men? une carri?re de diplomate qui l'a conduit ? Kuala Lumpur, ? Gen?ve, ? Ath?nes et ? Ankara. Auteur de nombreux travaux sur les monnayages de Rhodes et de l'Asie Mineure, il a compt? pendant plusieurs d?cennies au nombre des ?diteurs du Numismatic Chronicle et des Special Monographs de la Royal Numismatic Society. Nathan Badoud dirige le Service arch?ologique du canton de Gen?ve. En tant que professeur d'arch?ologie classique ? l'universit? de Fribourg, il a pilot? le projet de recherche ? Aegeum ?, destin? ? explorer l'int?gration ?conomique du monde grec - et plus sp?cialement ?g?en - dans l'empire romain. Les premiers r?sultats de ce projet financ? par le Fonds National Suisse sont publi?s dans le pr?sent volume. ? After studying Classics and numismatics at Oxford University, Richard Ashton became a career diplomat with postings at Kuala Lumpur, Geneva, Athens and Ankara. He is the author of numerous publications on the coinages of Rhodes and Asia Minor, and spent several decades editing the ancient half of The Numismatic Chronicle and the Special Publications of the Royal Numismatic Society. Nathan Badoud is head of the Archaeological Service of the Canton of Geneva. As professor of classical archaeology at the University of Fribourg, he directed the research project Aegeum, whose purpose is to study the economic integration of the Greek world, especially that of the Aegean region, into the Roman Empire. The first results from this project, which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, are published in the present volume.
