I think that my best apology for the insignificant size of this volume is the very character of the material composing it. In preparing the legends I sought especially for weird beauty; and I could not forget this striking observation in Sir Walter Scott's Essay on Imitations of the Ancient Ballad: The supernatural, though appealing to certain powerful emotions very widely and deeply sown amongst the human race, is, nevertheless, a spring which is peculiarly apt to lose its elasticity by being too much pressed upon. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
Biographie:
Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was one of the first writers to introduce Western readers to Japanese culture and literature. A native of Ireland, he became a longtime resident of the United States. Finally, fascinated by Japanese culture, this writer, translator, and teacher became a Japanese citizen and a professor of English literature at the Imperial University of Tokyo.

Greek-Japanese writer, translator, and educator Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, also known as Koizumi Yakumo (27 June 1850 - 26 September 1904) was responsible for introducing Japanese culture and literature to the West. His works, particularly his compilations of tales and ghost stories like Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things, provided previously unheard-of insights into Japanese culture. He was a journalist in the US before relocating to Japan and obtaining Japanese citizenship, especially in Cincinnati and New Orleans. His New Orleans-related writings, which were inspired by his ten-year residence there, are likewise well-known. From there, he was assigned to serve as a reporter in the French West Indies for two years before being transferred to Japan, where he spent the remainder of his life. Hearn wed Setsuko Koizumi in Japan, and the two had four kids together. His publications on Japan gave the West more understanding of a culture that was at the time still foreign to it....
