Présentation The Pit de Norris, Frank Format Broché
- Livre Littérature Générale
Résumé :
The Pit: A Story of Chicago is Frank Norris's powerful novel of speculation, ambition, and financial ruin set in the turbulent world of the Chicago grain markets. First published in 1903, the book forms the second volume of Norris's planned trilogy The Epic of the Wheat, a sweeping literary project examining the economic forces shaping modern society. At the center of the story is Curtis Jadwin, a wealthy and driven businessman whose obsession with controlling the wheat market leads him into the chaotic world of commodity speculation. As fortunes rise and collapse within the frenzied trading floor known as the pit, Norris portrays the grain exchange as a modern battlefield where greed, ambition, and risk collide. Jadwin's growing fixation with dominating the market gradually threatens both his fortune and his marriage. Combining vivid realism with dramatic storytelling, Norris captures the volatile energy of turn-of-the-century Chicago while exploring larger themes of economic power, human ambition, and the unpredictable forces of modern capitalism. The Pit remains one of the most significant American novels dealing with financial markets and the social consequences of speculative wealth....
Biographie:
Upton Sinclair (1878-1968) was an American novelist, journalist, and social reformer whose writings exposed corruption, inequality, and abuses of power. He wrote more than ninety books across many genres, but he is best remembered for The Jungle, the groundbreaking novel that brought national attention to the conditions of Chicago's meatpacking industry.A lifelong advocate for social change, Sinclair used his writing as a tool for investigating and challenging injustice. His works on labor, politics, and corporate influence made him one of the most prominent American muckrakers of the Progressive Era, and his influence on journalism and reform movements remains significant....
Sommaire:
Frank Norris (1870-1902) was an American novelist associated with the literary movement of naturalism. Influenced by writers such as ?mile Zola, Norris explored the powerful social and economic forces shaping human life in modern industrial society. His major works include McTeague, The Octopus, and The Pit, the latter two forming part of his ambitious but unfinished trilogy The Epic of the Wheat. Norris's writing helped establish a more realistic and socially engaged direction in American fiction at the turn of the twentieth century....
