Résumé :
A celebration of the lives, stories and contributions of Black British people. For every Stormzy there is an Olive Morris, one of countless men and women who form part of community narratives of survival, resistance, and cultural and political change.
Praise for the 100 Great Black Britons campaign:
'I am delighted to see the relaunch of 100 Great Black Britons. For too long the contribution of Britons of African and Caribbean heritage have been underestimated, undervalued and overlooked . . . It is only right that we once again come together to recognise and celebrate them'
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
'The current COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the centrality of Black people in Britain, to the NHS and care work, transport systems, food supplies, utilities, research, education and so much more . . . [100 Great Black Britons] celebrates what we have always known that Britain's history: it is irrefutably rooted in Black and global history'
Kevin Courtney, Joint General Secretary, National Education Union (NEU)
'We are delighted that 100 Great Black Britons is coming back to remind the nation of our homegrown heroes . . . The story of people of African and of Caribbean decent in the UK is part of the fabric of British history. We built Britain together'
Arike Oke, Managing Director of Black Cultural Archives
'There is no more important time than now, particularly considering recent events, to shine a light on the huge contributions made by black Britons'
Trevor Sterling, Chair, Mary Seacole Trust
'100 Great Black Britons is needed now more than ever. Celebrating Black Britons is important not just for all our children and teachers, but for society as a whole'
Dr Wanda Wyporska, Executive Director of The Equality Trust
'100 Great Black Britons is a vital initiative to contribute to a more representative and relevant curriculum and ensure that the impact of these inspiring individuals is fully recognised'
Liz Smith, Director of Learning and Engagement, National Portrait Gallery
