Extravagaria marks an important stage in Neruda's progress as a poet. The book was written just after he had returned to Chile after many wanderings and moved to his beloved Isla Negra on the Pacific coast. The collection celebrates this coming to rest, this rediscovery of the sea and the land, and the evolution of a a lyric poetry that is decidedly more personal than Neruda's earlier work. Written in what he called his autumnal period, the sixty-eight poems range from the wistful to the exultant, combining psalm and speculation, meditation and humorous aside.

Biographie:
Pablo Neruda, seud?nimo de Ricardo Eli?cer Neftal? Reyes, naci? en Parral, Provincia de Linares, Chile, en 1904. Pas? la mayor parte de su infancia y adolescencia en Temuco, donde escribi? sus primeros poemas. A partir de 1927 ocup? varios cargos consulares, primero en Asia y entre 1934 y 1938 en Espa?a, donde se hizo amigo de los escritores espa?oles de la Generaci?n del 27. En 1940 se instal? en M?xico y posteriormente, regres? a su patria donde, en 1945, fue elegido senador y recibi? el Premio Nacional de Literatura. En 1971 fue nombrado embajador en Par?s por el gobierno de Salvador Allende. Considerado uno de los mayores y m?s influyentes poetas de su siglo, fue reconocido con el Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1971. Tras menos de dos a?os en Par?s, regres? a Santiago, donde muri? en 1973.

Pablo Neruda (1904-1973) was born in the town of Parral in Chile. He received numerous prestigious awards for his work, including the International Peace Prize in 1950 and the Lenin Peace Prize in 1953. In 1971 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Two years later he died in Santiago, Chile, probably a victim of the Pinochet government. Pinochet denied permission for Neruda's funeral to be made a public event. Thousands of grieving Chileans disobeyed the curfew, however, and crowded the streets of Santiago.
