An updated translation of the original French publication published by Masson in 1996. This work exposes step by step the basic concepts which control the implementation of a telecommunication network. In applying the international standard organisation (ISO) model the author gives a pragmatic description of a coherent, progressive build-u p of the telecommunication system. This should permit students of telecommunications and information sciences, as well as practitioners, to rediscover the subject within the list of standards and regulations which comprise the subject of telecommunications. The author is responsible for telecommunications at the French Ministry of Defence, and lectures at the Conservatoire National d'Arts et M?tiers.
