    • Résumé :

I know not what I am, only that I am not of this world.

Trapped since birth within the crumbling, lightless stone walls of an endless castle, the narrator knows nothing of the outside world, of nature, or of other people. His entire existence is a solitary, gothic nightmare spent amongst decaying volumes and the silence of his ancestral tomb. He knows himself only as an Outsider--a being profoundly different and utterly alone.

Driven by a desperate, agonizing curiosity to see the sun and know the truth of life, he undertakes a terrifying ascent through the castle's highest, impossible tower. He breaches the final ceiling, crawling out onto the surface of the world, and finds himself standing in a vibrant, moonlit graveyard.

Drawn by lights and sounds of festivity, the Outsider makes his way toward a great house filled with revelers. But when he enters the brightly lit hall, his sudden appearance is met not with curiosity, but with a universal, echoing terror. People scream, faint, and flee in a panicked stampede, leaving him alone to face the source of the dread.

He searches for the unseen monster, only to find himself standing before a glistening, polished mirror. What he sees there is the horrifying, unnameable truth of his own face and form--a revelation that forces him to acknowledge his true nature and retreat forever into the comfortable darkness of the abyss.

      H. P. Lovecraft's most celebrated short story is a profound and intensely moving fable of isolation, self-discovery, and existential horror. The Outsider is a gothic masterpiece that asks: What if the monster is you?

      Biographie:
Howard Phillips Lovecraft (20 August 1890 - 15 March 1937) was an American writer of weird fiction and horror fiction, who is known for his creation of what became the Cthulhu Mythos. Lovecraft was relatively unknown during his lifetime. While his stories appeared in prominent pulp magazines such as Weird Tales not many people knew his name. Throughout his adult life, Lovecraft was never able to support himself from earnings as an author and editor. He was almost exclusively published in pulp magazines before he died in poverty at the age of 46, but is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors of supernatural horror fiction. Among his most celebrated tales are The Call of Cthulhu, The Rats in the Walls, At the Mountains of Madness, The Shadow over Innsmouth, and The Shadow Out of Time.

      Sommaire:
After spending more time than he can remember on his own inside a castle, an enigmatic man resolves to finally escape and seek human contact and daylight, both of which he has never experienced before. However, dissatisfied with what he finds on the outside, he hastens back to his old world inside his castle--to which he is now barred entry. First published in 1926, The Outsider is a short story by American horror writer H. P. Lovecraft that explores the concepts of loneliness and the Gothic ab-human. A fantastic example of Lovecratian supernatural literature not to be missed by fans and collectors of his seminal work. Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American writer of supernatural horror fiction. Though his works remained largely unknown and did not furnish him with a decent living, Lovecraft is today considered to be among the most significant writers of supernatural horror fiction of the twentieth century. Other notable works by this author include: The Call of Cthulhu, The Rats in the Walls, and The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Read & Co. is publishing this classic work now as part of our Fantasy and Horror Classics imprint in a new edition with a dedication by George Henry Weiss....
