BUILD A WEB-ENABLED PERSONAL FINANCE MANAGER

Beginning with a product that has its roots in the client/server era, you will build a Web-Enabled Personal Finance Manager that is similar to Quicken or Microsoft Money and revamp it for the Web. When you are finished, you will have a production-quality accounting application that will maintain your chart of accounts and transaction details and will draw up a trial balance report.

CREATE A GENERIC DATABASE ACCESS SERVICE

Using ASP.NET and Web Services, you can design applications that send and receive data using the Internet and HTTP. You will build a generic database access service that can interact with any database, and can bc used with applications built in Visual Basic.NET, C#, or ASP.NET, allowing you to take advantage of the graphical user interface they provide. After completing this project, you will incorporate it with the Personal Finance Manager that was created in Part II.

DEVELOP AN INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

With an Inventory Management System, inbound and outbound movements in inventory can be recorded. You will create an Inventory Management System that provides management data and stock balances, and will then revamp this system for the Web. The application that is developed makes use of the database Web service class developed in Part III as well as various stored procedures and triggers.

DEVELOP AND ENHANCE A CUSTOM CONTROL

Early in the book, you will develop a custom control called GenEditAdd that can be used to insert or update database changes, enhancing the usefulness of the DataGrid. This control can be hooked up to the DataGrid, allowing record editing and insertion to occur in a consistent manner. In Part V, you will enhance the functionality of this custom control and will add several features to it, including the ability to generate drop-down list columns, read-only columns, required field columns, provide descriptive column names and assign database stored procedures to handle the inserts and updates.

MASTER THE DEVELOPMENT TOOLS PROVIDED BY VISUALSTUDIO

You will begin with an overview of the important features of Visual Studio.NET, focusing on the various wizards, tools and components available. Then you will build a database Web Form using a Typed DataSet and utilizing the drag and drop features of Visual Studio.NET. At the end of Part VI, you will develop and consume Web Services with Visual Studio.NET.
