      • Résumé :
A scholarly survey of one of the most productive and exciting periods of English art is long overdue. Much bas been written about painters in oil, yet considering the enormous interest in and development of watercolour painting, the very Englishness of that art form, and the fact that the two complementary forms cannot easily be understood in isolation, it is surprising no in depth study of Victorian painting in oils and watercolours has been undertaken till now. The diversity and richness of Victorian art was influenced by many factors. It was an age of discovery, invention and imagination. It was a time of growing awareness of worlds across the seas, of social conditions and class divides. And nowhere was the great ebullience and conscience of the Victorians better reflected than in its painting. There was a sense that anything was possible, and the artists of the period were not slow to respond. The sixty odd years of Victoria's reign saw some of the most daring, imaginative, engimatic and evocative of English art. From literary, genre and fairy paintings, the social realism of Redgrave, and Frith's record of Victorian life, through the immensely influential Pre-Raphaelite, Aesthetic, and Classical movements, to the beginnings of Impressionism, there was no area into which the Victorian painter did not venture. Marching side by side with these new elements were traditional subjects - landscape, marine, portrait, sporting and animal paintings were still as popular and abundant, while the popular flower and cottage garden subjects lent themselves admirably to watercolour painting. In describing the various schools of thought and artistic movements, the influences, the personalities, the rivalry between 'giants' of the art world, between oil painters and watercolourists, and between the professional societies, Christopher Wood paints a rich and vivid picture not only of the development of art through the nineteenth century, but also of the life and conditions of the times so much reflected in many of the paintings. Profusely illustrated, with 102 colour plates and 76 black and white illustrations, this is a unique Study of a fascinating period of English art, and one which, thanks largely to Christopher Wood, has now received due recognition.
