The completely revised and enlarged second edition of this book provides an up-to-date overview of all major topics in sedimentary geology. It is unique in its quantitative approach to denudation- accumulation systems and basin fillings, including dynamic aspects. The relationship between tectonism and basin evolution as well as the concepts of sequence cycle and event stratigraphy in various depositional environments are extensively discussed. Due to rapid progress in the past decade in the fields of sediment budget as well as sequence, cycle and event stratigraphy, a complete revision of Chapters 7, 9 and 11 was necessary. Biographie:
Gerhard Einsele obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in geology and mineralogy at the University of Tuebingen. After working as engineering geologist and hydrogeologist he spent about 10 years as assistant and associate professor at the Geological-Paleontological Institute in Tuebingen. This period was interrupted by a post-doctoral research fellowship at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, California. In 1968, he became full professor of geology at the University of Kiel. Four years later he returned to Tuebingen as professor of exogenic dynamics with emphasis on sedimentary geology and various applied topics. He retired in 1993. Gerhard Einsele has developed and maintained a broad interest in various fields of earth sciences. Field trips, ship cruises, and research projects in many countries have widened and extended his professional experience. In the field of sedimentary geology he has studied both ancient rocks and young marine sediments. He edited and co-edited several books and special issues of journals. He served on the editorial boards of several journals, as a member of scientific committees, and as adviser for national and international funding agencies. In 1991 he received the Stille medal of the German Geological Society. He is Research Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, and served in 1997 as Distinguished Lecturer of the International Association of Sedimentologists.
