Présentation Democracy de Adams, Henry Format Broché
- Livre Littérature Générale
Résumé :
Democracy is a novel about political power, its acquisition, use and abuse. It is set at the beginning of a new administration, with the election campaign just over and the new President of the United States just having been elected. However, all the characters depicted are entirely fictitious...
Biographie:
Henry Adams (1838-1918) was an American historian, novelist, journalist, and member of one of the most prominent political families in the United States. The grandson of President John Quincy Adams and great-grandson of President John Adams, he grew up with a close awareness of American public life, diplomacy, and political power. Educated at Harvard, Adams served as a private secretary to his father, Charles Francis Adams, during the Civil War, when the elder Adams was United States minister to Britain.Adams later became a respected historian and teacher, serving as a professor at Harvard and writing major works on American history, politics, and culture. His books include History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres, and The Education of Henry Adams, the last of which became one of the most celebrated works of American autobiography. As a novelist, Adams brought historical intelligence, social observation, and political skepticism to his fiction. Democracy, first published anonymously, drew on his intimate knowledge of Washington society and remains one of the most enduring American novels about political ambition and moral compromise. His work continues to be valued for its intellectual force, elegant irony, and searching examination of power in modern life....
Sommaire:
Henry Adams was educated at Harvard College, where he subsequently held a professorship. His historical writings are what made him most famous, especially History of the United States During the Administrations of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, a nine-volume set that txters American history in the early 19th century. The intellectual and cultural currents of Henry Adams's day had a profound effect on him. He was connected to members of the late 19th-century cultural elite, such as John Hay and Henry James. Adams was well-known for being sceptical of the course that American politics and culture were taking, and this mistrust is clear in a lot of his writing. The Education of Henry Adams, an autobiographical reflection on his life and the evolving society around him, brought Adams notoriety later in life. Written in the third person, this piece delves into his experiences, thoughts on the revolutionary events of the late 19th and early 20th century, and his intellectual development....
