Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) was a German-Swiss novelist, poet, and essayist whose work explores self-knowledge, spiritual conflict, individuality, art, education, and the search for inner freedom. Born in Calw, Germany, into a family shaped by missionary and scholarly traditions, Hesse struggled against rigid educational and social expectations, experiences that later informed many of his novels of youth, rebellion, and self-discovery. His fiction often joins psychological realism with symbolic, philosophical, and spiritual inquiry.Hesse's major works include Demian, Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, Journey to the East, and The Glass Bead Game.
