Prof. Dr. Guerino Mazzola earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Zurich University. He wrote the groundbreaking book The Topos of Music in 2002, its formal language and models are used by leading researchers in Europe, India, Japan, and North America and have become a foundation of music software design. Prof. Mazzola has an appointment as professor in the School of Music at the College of Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota. Biographie:
Linshujie Zheng is a soprano. She has a master's degree with distinction at Cardiff University. Currently she pursues a doctoral degree in voice at the University of Minnesota. Zheng has received awards and scholarships in China, the UK, and the US. She has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Wales Millennium centre, and St David's Hall. She also sung principal roles, including Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Genovieve in Suor Angelica, Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro. Zheng not only focuses on the performing arts, she also has a passion for Gesture and reception theory. Guerino Mazzola qualified as a professor in mathematics and in computational science at the University of Z?rich. Visiting professor at the ENS in Paris in 2005. Since 2007 professor at the School of Music, University of Minnesota. He developed a Mathematical Music Theory and music software presto and Rubato. 2007-2021 he was the president of the Societyfor Mathematics and Computation in Music. This is an introduction to basic music technology, including acoustics for sound production and analysis, Fourier, frequency modulation, wavelets, and physical modeling and a classification of musical instruments and sound spaces for tuning and counterpoint. The acoustical theory is applied to its implementation in analogue and digital technology, including a detailed discussion of Fast Fourier Transform and MP3 compression. Beyond acoustics, the book discusses important symbolic sound event representation and software as typically realized by MIDI and denotator formalisms. The concluding chapters deal with globalization of music on the Internet, referring to iTunes, Spotify and similar environments.
