The 1990s were an extremely turbulent time in Albanian history. The collapse of the dictatorship and the end of decades of
isolation marked the dawn of a new era. Against the background of dramatic upheavals, this volume assembles photographs,
personal narratives, memories, and reflections that tell about life in remote regions of the country, about migration, the longing for change, and the transformative spirit in the fields of art, culture, and civil society. As few people in Albania possessed a camera in the early years of transition, this makes the photographs in this volume rare testimonies of that time.
