As it moves from Chicago in the late 80's to Los Angeles on the cusp of a new millennium, Patchwork encompasses a mercurial decade in the lives of its characters. This debut novel - told with candor, insight, and a humor both gentle and scathing - sets the story of gay lovers in transition, and a family in the midst of personal upheaval, as they struggle to redefine themselves in the shadow of AIDS. The effects of the AIDS crisis on an extended Midwestern family unfold against the backdrop of the NAMES Project Quilt in Chicago in 1989. The ailing Randy Manning, his partner Sal, and Randy's parents Ben and Barbara spend a day at Navy Pier to see the AIDS quilt, where Randy plans to unveil his own remembrance piece. After Randy's death, Sal disappears to Los Angeles where he tries to reconcile his past, his H.I.V. status, and a world where the promises of new drugs coexist with the possibility of new love. Patchwork portrays a mercurial decade in its characters lives: lovers in transition and a family in the midst of personal upheaval as they struggle to redefine themselves in the shadow of tragedy....

Dan Loughry is a Los Angeles-based writer who has contributed film and music reviews, along with the occasional feature, to Frontiers-IN Los Angeles for the past six years. He's been an active contributing writer to the pop-culture website Modern Tonic (www.moderntonic.com) and has reviewed for the West Virginia monthly Graffiti.
