Toby Olson has published ten novels, the most recent of which, Tampico, appeared from the University of Texas Press in 2008, and twenty books of poetry. A new novel, Walking, will appear soon from Chatwin Press. The recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts, Olson's novel Seaview received the PEN/Faulkner award for The Most Distinguished Work of America Fiction in 1983. Toby Olson lives in Philadelphia and North Truro, on Cape Cod....

Toby Olson splits his time between Philadelphia and Cape Cod. His novel Seaview won the PEN/Faulkner Award for the most distinguished work of American Fiction in 1983. He has published ten previous novels and several collections of poetry. Olson taught at the Aspen Writers' Workshop (which he co-founded), Long Island University, The New School for Social Research, and Temple University....

Death Sentences is Toby Olson's first major collection since Darklight (Shearsman, 2007), and many of the poems herein are addressed to his wife, Miriam, who died, after suffering for years from Alzheimer's disease, in 2014. Many of the other poems, typical of Olson's concerns, stand as celebrations of what is observed, without metaphor or other literary devices intervening. The four series-Death Sentences, I Don't Know, Disturbed and Etudes-are highly structured experiments with the sentence. ...
