Résumé :
This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Guernesey, les po?mes furent publi?s en trois s?ries: en 1859, en 1877 et en 1883. Port?e par un talent po?tique estim? comme sans ?gal o? se r?sume tout l'art de Hugo, apr?s l'accomplissement des Ch?timents et des Contemplations qui lui ont ouvert de nouveaux horizons, la L?gende des si?cles est consid?r?e comme la seule v?ritable ?pop?e fran?aise et, suivant le jugement port? par Baudelaire, comme la seule ?pop?e moderne possible.Devant lui, en r?ve, le po?te contemple le mur des si?cles, vague et terrible, sur lequel se dessinent et se m?lent toutes les sc?nes du pass?, du pr?sent et du futur, et o? d?file la longue procession de l'humanit?. Les po?mes sont la peinture de ces sc?nes ?parses et aper?ues fugitivement, dans un entrem?lement de visions terribles. Hugo n'a recherch? ni l'exactitude historique ni encore moins l'exhaustivit?. Au contraire, il s'attache plus volontiers ? des figures obscures, le plus souvent invent?es, mais qui incarnent et symbolisent leur ?ge et leur si?cle. Comme il l'annon?ait lui-m?me dans la Pr?face de la Premi?re S?rie, C'est de l'histoire ?cout?e aux portes de la l?gende . Les po?mes, tant?t lyriques, ?piques ou satiriques, forment une suite de l'aventure humaine, cherchant non ? r?sumer mais ? illustrer l'histoire du genre humain, ? t?moigner, au sens originel du terme, de son long cheminement des t?n?bres vers la lumi?re.Ce livre, c'est le reste effrayant de Babel C'est la lugubre Tour des Choses, l'?dificeDu bien, du mal, des pleurs, du deuil, du sacrifice,Fier jadis, dominant les lointains horizons,Aujourd'hui n'ayant plus que de hideux tron?ons,?pars, couch?s, perdus dans l'obscure vall?e C'est l'?pop?e humaine, ?pre, immense - ?croul?e.La L?gende des si?cles n'?tait pourtant pas d'embl?e le dessein extraordinaire qu'elle est devenue par la suite. Son origine, et l'id?e originelle, se situe dans ces Petites Epop?es dont le titre et le vague projet figurent parmi de nombreux autres imagin?s et not?s par Hugo dans ses carnets d?s 1848, et dont rien n'indique qu'elles portaient en elles une ambition aussi vaste.
