Everyone is capable of being an incredible gardener and every piece of land is capable of becoming an incredible garden. High elevation gardeners may experience cold, dry, and windy weather, along with invading wildlife, and less than ideal soil. But with this book you will learn the tricks and techniques to overcome any challenge and create an oasis of edible plants, even in the harshest of environments. In part one of this book, we explore what makes your garden plot unique, and from there determine what vegetables will grow best. If you don't understand the specifics of your garden, you will likely find yourself blindsided by challenges that could easily be fixed or avoided. In part two of the book, we look at solutions to some of the biggest challenges that high altitude gardeners face, including a cold, short growing season, arid climate, strong winds, hungry wildlife, weeds, minimal wild pollinators, and poor soil, as well as pests and diseases. Part three is a reference section with the distinct growing parameters of the most common garden vegetables, as well as their suitability for being grown at high altitudes. This section can and should be regularly referred to over the years as you perfect growing food in your unique garden. Gardening is a truly beautiful endeavor that should not needlessly be limited by altitude. Whether you're gardening at 5,000 feet or 11,000 feet, use this book to create your own abundant and healthy garden.
Biographie:
Kevin spent years managing small organic vegetable farms on the East Coast of the United States before starting his own organic farm in Massachusetts. Eventually Kevin left Massachusetts and moved to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, where he developed a love and appreciation for gardening at high altitudes. He now helps manage a half-acre community garden at 8,000 feet. He has visited and helped out on many gardens and farms throughout North and Central America. He has explored the commonalities and differences of numerous high altitude regions, and even though each high altitude climate is different, Kevin sees a common thread between them that he uses to inspire and teach people to garden in these challenging environments.
