Set in 1997, Shout is a seven-character play that explores the history of a family, and the many layers of meaning that comprise the concept of family. With its multi-ethnic characters, the play reflects the challenging and subtle ways in which the dynamics of age, race, and gender must be endured and carefully weighed in reconciling love.



The diversity of the people and personalities inhabiting Mel Donalson's play, Shout, certainly brings a tension and, at times, an ironic humor to the central conflict and builds slowly as the pressure mounts. The secrets waiting to be revealed unfold sporadically and land with a poignant, emotional impact that moves the action forward towards the inevitable outcome. Very smart writing fuels the argumentative discourse….Each character is skillfully given a specific voice about…love, racism, interracial marriage and their views of the humanity of it all. One character mentions the 'mix of virtue and vice,' and somewhere in this mixture, there is a revelation revealed. How the playwright maps this emotional labyrinth becomes a profound experience for the audience.

MEL DONALSON has taught American Literature, African American Studies, American Cinema, and Creative Writing on various campuses, including Bates College, the University of California-Santa Barbara, Pasadena City College, and UCLA.
