It is said, however, that the company have only the easy portions of the railway to bu?d, the Government continuing to construct the heavier portions. This state ment is untrue. The Pacific Railway Company have to build 650 'miles north ofernment railways of the Province of Que bec have cost nearly double the originai contract price, and the section of the Pacific Railway between Thunder Bay and Selkirk will cost 50 per cent. More than the engineer's estimates. All these contingencies are assumed by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, the Government being relieved from them by means of this contract. We know what our liabilities are connected with the Canadian Pa01fic Railway contract. Before it was entered into these liabilities were sources of anxiety to every thoughtful man in the country. By the contract we have secured the con struction of the railway 'far within the amount provided by Mr. Mackenzie as the annual expenditure in connection with it in 1874 under the Carnarvon terms. By these terms he appropriated dollars3, 000, 000 a year for the completion of the railway from West of Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean. 'to day if every obligation incurred by the construction of this railway were completed, it all the subsidies were paid, the annual charge upon the Dominion, taking the interest at 4' per cent., would only be or less, for the whole road, including the portion north of Lake Superior, than Mr. Mac kenzie appropriated in 1874 for the line from Thunder Bay to the Pacific Ocean. It is impossible to imagine an arrange ment more in the interest of the country than the contract for the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
