Accompanying a major retrospective at Tate Britain of iconic British photographer Don McCullin, this beautifully produced book includes a comprehensive range of work from the mid 1950s to the present day. Renowned as one of Britain's greatest living photographers, McCullin has had a long career as a conflict photographer, capturing images from around the world including Vietnam, Northern Ireland, Lebanon and Biafra, often at great personal risk. Highlighting all areas of McCullin's photography, the book also includes his social documentary practice, travel assignments and his ongoing engagement with landscape and still life. His most recent photographs for his current project 'Southern Frontiers' connect the two key strands of his work : conflict and landscape. A native Londoner, McCullin began to take photographs in the 1950s, documenting his surroundings and local community, including the gangs in his neighbourhood. In 1959 his photograph The Guunors in their Sunday Suits, Finsbury Park, London, a portrait of a notorious Finsbury Park gang who were involved in the murder of a police officer, launched his career as a photojournalist. He went onto become one of the best-known war correspondents in the country. McCullin's unforgettable and sometimes harrowing images are accompanied here by his own words. Essays focus on different elements of his practice and a comprehensive chronology maps his career in the context of world events.
