In 1860 he was appointed Senator. He died on the 22d of May, 1873.
Manzoni was primarily 3. Christian, secondari a patriot and a man of letters. During his residence in Paris he had yielded to the prevalent religious indifference, but in 1810 he became convinced of the verity of the Catholic faith, and thereafter remained its reverent votary and loyal champion. The half century following his establishment at Milan was the period of the long aghation which resulted in the liberation and the uni fication of Italy. Manzoni followed the struggle with intense concern for its success, and did not hesitate, when occasion called, to sign himself among the patn'ots. Lover of peace though he was, he felt the appeal to arms a just and necessary one. In the actual fighting, however, he took no part.
