Nevertheless, it is a known fact that much land in this state which formerly supported people now has failed, because the pre vailing systen allowed soil loss. Although the farm operators have made general use of manure, crop residues, fertilizer, and lime for the improvement of the soil, they have frequently allowed un managed rainfall to defeat their purposes. On sloping land, the soil has been carried away much faster than it has been built up or improved.
