This little story is offered to teachers who have felt the lack of lively and entertaining books in German for those pupils who have done some elementary reading, but who are not yet prepared to study and appreciate the greater masterpieces of German literature. This is by no means a classic, but it is an amusing modern story, and the interest of the action will be found to carry the pupil over hard constructions; while the fact that it takes place on German ground and among German people will teach him much of the customs of the country and the life of its inhabitants. In difficulty it is suited to the second year of school, or the first year of college, work; and it may be used with equal advantage for rapid reading or for more careful grammatical drill. It will also form an excellent basis for conversation in classes where that is made an object, its vocabulary being, to quite a re markable degree, that of daily life; while for those intending to travel in Germany it will prove a most valuable preparation.
