In his debut collection, Brian Sneeden presents a poetry that is equal parts spell and song, invoking scenes from the Greek islands, the loam-clotted fields of the antebellum South, and the city which emerges, like Cavafy?s city of memory, from the filaments of loss. These poems reach forwards and backwards in time, staging reweavings of such familiar myths as Persephone and Demeter, alongside contemporary myths of selfhood?while at all times conjuring and dispelling the alcoves, the porticoes, and the nearly shadowed rooms of the metaphysical city the self creates, and carries, from life to life.
Biographie: Brian Sneeden is a poet, translator, and editor based in southern Scotland. His poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in Poetry, Poetry Review, and other magazines. Translations of his poetry have been published internationally in Arabic, Italian, Modern Greek, and Serbian. Last City, his debut collection, appeared in the 2018 Carnegie Mellon Poetry Series. His translations of poetry from the Modern Greek have received an NEA Literature Translation Fellowship, a PEN/Heim Translation Grant, and other recognitions. He is the translator of four collections of poetry, including Phoebe Giannisi's Cicada, and most recently, GOATSONG. He is a senior lecturer in creative writing and publishing at Manchester Metropolitan University.
