40 walks in the Apennine mountains of central Italy. Val di Rose, Monte Amaro and Corno Grande. Beautiful hilltop villages, forested valleys and rugged peaks. Abruzzo offers wonderful walking. Despite its close proximity to Rome, it is one of the wildest and least populated regions of Italy, and has 169 peaks over 2000m high. Over a third of Abruzzo lies within national and regional parks, and its stunning natural environments are carefully protected and maintained. The walks in this guide explore the region's spectacular blend of snowy mountains, grassy plains and forested canyons, hillside olive groves and vineyards. Thousands of years of history are reflected in abandoned castles, hilltop villages and ancient farmsteads and echoed in splendid abbeys, silent churches and remote hermitages. 40 varied walks from 4km to 25km. Most routes accessible May to October. Walks for all abilities graded from 1 (easy) to 3 (difficult). Useful glossary of Italian terms and phrases.
Biographie:
Stuart Haines is a walker, mountain lover, guidebook writer, project manager and occasional viticulturalist. His explorations of the remoter corners of central Italy began in 2004, following many years of climbing and adventuring in the Alps, North America and his native UK. Since 2007 he has been based between Bristol, England, and Casa La Rocca, the country house in the heart of Abruzzo that he renovated with his partner, Hil.
